Centre to bring four labour codes to protect workers

The Union labour ministry proposes to come out with four  labour codes  in the areas of  Wages, Industrial relations, Social security and  Working condition to strengthen safety and social security of workers.   The Government is holding tri-partite meetings with representatives of trade unions, employers and Central and State governments on a host of labour-related issues.  Noting that there are a number of laws concerning labour and employment, Dattatreya said his Ministry is doing "simplification, rationalisation and amalgamation" of legislations to promote productivity and welfare of workers.  Referring to the issue involving Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, who was accused of underpaying her maid in the US, he said developed countries try to protect workers. 

Online Payment of EPF not Mandatory for employers remitting contribution below Rs. 1 lakh per month

TRANSPARENT CENTRAL LABOUR INSPECTION SCHEME FOR RANDOM INSPECTION OF UNITS

(a) Computerized list of inspections to be generated randomly as per risk-based objective criteria. (b) Serious matters to be covered under mandatory inspection list. (c) Complaints-based inspections to be determined centrally after examination of data and evidence. (d) Mandatory uploading of Inspection Reports within 72 hours. (e) Since the Labour Inspection Scheme's launch, 21,552 inspections generated as on 01 January 2015; of these, 18,149 are already uploaded. (f) Ten States have indicated interest in joining 'Shram Suvidha'.

Self-certification for 16 Labour Laws in Maharashtra

In order to promote the ease of doing business, the Maharashtra government has announced a scheme which allows factories and shops self-certification pertaining to 16 labour laws. However, this will not apply to businesses involving chemical or hazardous products. Self-certification has been introduced for 16 labour laws including the Payment of Wages Act, 1936; Minimum Wages Act 1948; Contract Labour (Regulation a nd Abolition) Act, 1970; Payment of Bonus Act, 1965; Factories Act, 1948; and Maharashtra Shops and Establishment Act, 1948. Also, the Child Labour Act, 1986 and Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) 2013 and the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. The government says the scheme will benefit nearly 35,000 factories and over 27 lakh shops across the state since it will cut down on inspections by the labour department.
